SNAP recipients in Bossier, Caddo and DeSoto parishes whose food losses exceeded 60% of their monthly benefit amount may request replacement of their full loss amount (up to their total monthly allotment) by submitting a completed and signed SNAP 38 form.ĭCFS is the state agency responsible for keeping children safe, helping individuals and families become self-sufficient and providing refuge during disasters. Those parishes are Bienville, Caldwell, Claiborne, East Carroll, Franklin, Jackson, Lincoln, Madison, Morehouse, Natchitoches, Ouachita, Red River, Richland, Tensas, Union, Webster, West Carroll and Winn. SNAP recipients in other impacted parishes who lost food purchased with SNAP benefits due to a power outage of 24 straight hours or more can request replacement benefits by submitting a completed and signed SNAP 38 form to DCFS. The estimated amount of replacements is $8,564,647.īased on LPSC data, there were no other parishes with widespread, sustained outages to meet the required threshold for automatic mass replacements. There are about 32,974 SNAP households in the three parishes. DCFS expects to issue the automatic replacement benefits by Friday, June 30, 2023. The approval waives a regulation that typically requires a household to submit a written request for replacement benefits due to power outages and other disruptions. One waiver allows DCFS to automatically replace 60 percent of a household’s June benefits in three parishes – Bossier, Caddo and DeSoto – because more than half of residents there lost power for 24 hours or more, based on data from the Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC). Or, they could issue birth certificates on particular births, that only include information on one particular birth. They could, if they desired, print out one report listing all recorded birth information for the year 2007. Let's say the government has a "database" with all birth records in it. If you're confused (as I am), let me offer this example: Aside from being able to generate a report including the list of all customers, I also want to be able to pull information on just one customer and generate a report with that one customer's information only. So far I have accomplished this by inputting all customer information into a table and creating a report that has the style I want.Ģ. Have one master file called "Register of Customers", that includes the name, address, and phone number of every customer. What I am trying to do is create a database to store customer information. Hello, I am new to this forum (and new to database programs in general). So many resources! It felt much less tight early on (good!) but also kind of ridiculous at the end (maybe not so good: I had nearly 20 titanium just sitting in my warehouse and not a space project to be seen). We had to break it into two shorter stacks, and we didn’t make it through the whole deck this time.īetween the prelude cards and the colonies, holy wow were we rolling in money and other resources. The Project deck is nearly a foot tall now, absurd. There are, of course, new corporations and tons of new Project cards. So I can see if I need to go out to Pluto now to get a slightly lower batch of goodies rather than gambling that my opponent won’t go out later and get even more goodies. There’s some really great push-your-luck stuff baked into letting the colonies’ tracker cubes climb and climb and then oh gosh who will get there first? It’s also solvable and transparent, because the first player token predictably moves. So whoever sends their fleet first gets the goodies. The big thing I noticed about adding colonies is that the first-player token is more important than ever because every colony can only be visited by one trade fleet. Weird oversight, but they’re called out super specifically in the rulebook. There are three colonies that don’t produce anything without a starting colony, and they’re not marked as such in any way whatsoever. Every tracker ticks up at the end of every round. Then the tracker resets to as low as it can be set (the established colonies force the tracker cube higher on the track). Whoever gets their trade fleet to the colony cashes in, and everyone who established a colony there will also get some goodies. I suspect the very hardest-core TM players will have already evaluated that the colonies are dangerous distractions from the business of ripping through the terraforming process as efficiently as possible, but I got my all-time highest score in a 3p game last night and I’m completely certain it was due to the colonies.Įach round, the production of every colony (with three weird exceptions that I’ll note below) ticks up. There’s a new Standard Project action, which is to colonize a moon (each player can colonize each moon once) and a new action to send a trade fleet to trigger the moon’s production. Then we each get a trade fleet token (little white arrow with a cube-hole to mark it as ours). The corp I had last night, new to Colonies, adds another colony of my choice (ye gawds, one more critical decision to make). There’s a deck of colonies from which you’ll start with 2 + the number of players. Getting the game rolling is like a 20 minute affair now, but it definitely starts with a bang once it does.įor the record, I adored the Colonies expansion. Incorporating new setup steps has also made just starting the game kind of a hassle: now we need to decide which of three maps we’re playing on, and set up the Venus side board, and set up a tableau of freestanding space colonies and its side board, and finally work out your perfect starting combination of corporation, prelude pair and project cards. Each expansion, barring Prelude, has just stretched that out even longer. Almost every game I’ve ever played with this many expansions (CCGs excepted) has usually jumped the shark by the third of fourth.īasic Terraforming Mars is already a fairly complex, fairly long-play affair. And Prelude, chef kiss! And then Colonieslast night. Baseline TM was good, but adding Hellas & Elysiumwas better. We keep written win records, for crying out loud. Terraforming Mars has been a huge hit here for a year, now. I have a very bad habit of snagging any and every expansion for most of the board games I have here and then letting them collect dust for weeks or months. Haven’t played Terraforming Marsfor many weeks, but I remembered I had the Colonies expansion sitting in the box. The Mercado de Alvalade is one of the best food markets in Lisbon, and up on one end there’s a small, busy restaurant called Sem Palavras. This was our first time in Lisbon and I chose to stay in some apartments directly opposite the Time out food market. Over on HBO, you may care a lot less about what’s happening in, say, Dorne or the Pyke, than what’s up in King’s Landing or Winterfell, but it’s almost always clear how what’s happening in those remote corners of the kingdom impacts everyone else, where season one of The Expanse took much too long to turn its cards over and reveal the conspiracy that connected Miller to Holden to what was happening on Earth. The season one mystery in particular took a problem that GoT has also dealt with and made it worse. On the other, they can be bound too tightly by material that may have worked better on the page (I haven’t read the novels) than it does in a television show. On the one hand, The Expanse creative team (which includes Children of Men screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby) have so much material and story already mapped out for them. It’s not suddenly a great drama - Miller, and maybe Chrisjen and Rocinante mechanic Amos (Wes Chatham), are still the only characters who feel fully three-dimensional, with the others suffering to varying degrees from thinner writing or acting - but it’s taking greater advantage of all these worlds and characters it has to play with.Īs with Game of Thrones, the show is an example of the benefits and challenges of adapting a series of dense books set in alternate timelines with a huge cast of players. Those episodes from the end of season one, coupled with the first four episodes of season two (it premieres Wednesday night at 10), serve as a reminder not only that TV shows are usually more interesting when characters come together than when they’re kept apart, but that they’re usually more interesting when the characters (and the audience) actually know what’s happening and can do something about it than when they’re fumbling around in the dark, searching for clues to some vague mystery. Miller left the space station and hooked up with James Holden (Steven Strait) and his three fellow survivors, now crewing a Martian gunship they’d picked up in their travels and dubbed the Rocinante (from the Spanish word for “workhorse,” and also the name of Don Quixote’s steed), while all three investigations began pointing to the same conspiracy to infect the 100,000 inhabitants of a remote station with a mutagen so an Earth company could study its effects.Īnd, with that, The Expanse got a whole lot better. There was just enough momentum to the story to keep going as I binged the first season on Amazon last week, but not enough coherence that I might have kept trying to track the different mysteries over the course of its more traditional air schedule on Syfy.īut then, towards the end of season one, all the unconnected story threads began tying together in very satisfactory fashion. Corey (the pen name for writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), and as we’ve seen at times even on the mega-budget Game of Thrones, it can be hard to make so many disparate storylines feel equally important and connected to one another. The show was adapting a sprawling series of science fiction novels by James S.A. Jane was excellent in a role so archetypal, he even wore a fedora like a 1950s detective, the space adventures offered thrills but sketchier characters and performances, and the Earth scenes with Chrisjen tended to drag. The stories unfolded in parallel, rarely seeming to have anything to do with one another, and because all three of them were mysteries on some level - What happened to the girl? Who blew up the ship and why? Who’s really the bad guy in the cold war between Earth, Mars, and the outer planets? - the series often felt like three separate shows of varying quality and interest levels that just happened to take place in the same shared universe. But for most of the Syfy drama’s first season, the more relevant expanse seemed to be the one that existed between the show’s three main plots: a hard-boiled crime drama where gumshoe Joe Miller (Thomas Jane) searches for a missing heiress on a station in the asteroid belt a space adventure in which the four survivors of a destroyed mining ship face constant peril from the solar system’s many military factions and a political thriller where United Nations executive Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) investigates what she thinks is a terrorist plot against Earth. The title of The Expanse refers to the vast gulf of space in a future where humanity has colonized much of our solar system. So, if you thought that 90 degree angles and straight sides of the same length define a square, then think again. And as it turns out, they are all the same length. In a similar way, the positive curvature of the sphere made the 90 angles in the triangle we saw above look bigger than 90 degrees.Īlthough the sides of the five-sided shape look curved to us, they are straight in the sense that they're segments of geodesics: lines of shortest distance on the pseudosphere. The angles here look smaller than 90 degrees, but this is an illusion caused by the negative curvature. (We only show the top part of the pseudosphere here as it's sufficient for the illustration.) The image is taken from the Numberphile video 5-sided square, on which this article is based. This five-sided shape drawn on the pseudosphere has straight sides of equal length and 90 degree angles. One side consist of half a great circle, and the other of one half of the great circle that's at right angles to the original one. On the sphere we can even draw a two-sided shape whose sides have the same length and meet at 90 degree angles. In our example, they add up to 90+90+90=270 degrees. This also illustrates that the angles of a triangle drawn on a shape with positive curvature add up to more than 180 degrees (which is the case in the plane). What we have created here is a straight-sided shape whose sides all have the same length and meet in 90 degree angles - and it has three sides, not four! (In technical language, a line of shortest distance on a surface is called a geodesic) That's because, just like the shortest distance between two points on a plane is along a straight line, so the shortest distance between two points on a sphere is along a great circle. The great circles on a sphere are the analogues of straight lines on the plane. Each line corresponds to a quarter of a great circle, so they all have the same length. The lines you have walked along all form parts of great circles on the sphere, that is, circles that have the same diameter as the sphere itself. If you sat yourself down at any given point on the sphere, you'd see the sphere curving downwards away from your bottom in all directions.Ī spherical triangle with 90 degree angles and sides of equal length. Intuitively that's because it "curves outwards" in all directions. A sphere has positive Gaussian curvature at every point. The Euclidean plane has zero constant curvature at every point, as you'd probably expect: the plane isn't curvy, so it should have zero curvature. The details are explained in this article, but for our purpose we distinguish three types of surfaces: those that have zero Gaussian curvature at every point, those that have positive Gaussian curvature at every point, and those that have negative Gaussian curvature at every point. You can measure how bent a surface is at a given point using the notion of Gaussian curvature (named after the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss). What happens if you change the curvature of the plane? Will the number of sides of the shape change? How curvy is curvy? However, there are different types of surfaces which can be described using the notion of curvature. It is true that on this plane, any closed, straight-sided figure whose sides are all the same length and whose interior angles are all right angles must have four sides - it must be a square. The two-dimensional, flat surface we usually do our geometry on at school is known as theĮuclidean plane. And it's similarly impossible to draw a pentagon, hexagon, or shape with more straight sides that has all 90 degree angles. It's impossible to draw a triangle with all 90 degree angles. The 90 degrees and the four straight sides seem to go together. An honest square: it has four straight sides of equal length and four 90 degree angles |
